gatekeeper-1
The Gatekeeper

Every threshold asks something of the person who approaches it.

At the center of The Gatekeeper stands an ornate cemetery gate, the Kwa Bawon, and a cross crowned with a black top hat. The imagery draws from Haitian Vodou symbolism associated with Baron Samedi, the powerful guardian of the cemetery, the dead, the crossroads, and the passage between the world of the living and the ancestral realm.

The cross marks the threshold.

The hat announces the presence of its guardian.

And the gate represents the boundary between what is familiar and what lies beyond ordinary perception.

But the words surrounding the image reveal the deeper meaning of the piece: **THE ONLY GATEKEEPER THAT EXISTS, IS THE ONE IN YOUR OWN MIND**

There is an intentional tension in that statement.

Within the spiritual symbolism of the image, the gate has a keeper. The cemetery is not portrayed as an empty place but as a threshold—one associated with ancestors, transition, death, continuation, and forces beyond the visible world.

Yet for the seeker standing on this side of the gate, another gatekeeper often appears first:

fear.

Fear of death.
Fear of the unknown.
Fear of spirit.
Fear of ancestral traditions.
Fear of questioning inherited beliefs.
Fear of looking beyond the boundaries of what we were taught was possible.

That is the gatekeeper this design asks you to confront.

The top hat and cemetery cross remind us that some traditions understood the boundary between living and dead not simply as an ending, but as a crossing point. The ancestors have crossed. Memory has crossed. Knowledge has crossed. The question is whether fear will prevent the living from approaching that threshold with curiosity, respect, and discernment.

The candles illuminate the entrance, symbolizing consciousness brought into places that fear would prefer to leave unexplored.

The offerings acknowledge relationship and remembrance.

The cemetery gate becomes the dividing line between the known and unknown.

And the black top hat signals that the threshold is not abandoned—it is guarded.

This gives the design its central paradox: There may be guardians at the spiritual gate, but fear is the gatekeeper you carry inside yourself.

For Black Magick Matters, this imagery reaches beyond any one spiritual system.
